Anyone who’s set out for a heart-pumping run, bike ride, or hike in the past couple of years knows how hard can be to get a workout in while wearing a face mask. But now, years in to the pandemic, it seems that nearly every drugstore, fashion brand, and activewear brand has launched their own face mask claiming to be the most comfortable or breathable one out there.

To sift through the multitude of options out there, Women's Health consulted a few doctors to get their expert opinion on which face masks are truly so comfortable and breathable that you can actually work out in them while still protecting yourself. Whether your local gym has decided to continue masking requirements or you feel safer wearing one as an extra precaution (on top of getting vaccinated!), it's never a bad idea to stock up on some comfortable face masks.

"The more layered and finely-woven the mask is, the more protection it offers." says physician Dr. David Nazarian, MD. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner, MD, agrees. "To get adequate protection, it’s important to wear a multi-layer mask that contains a more advanced filtration system," he says.

"Disposable masks using synthetic materials have become the most popular and effective option available. Since they're disposable, you don’t need to worry about cleaning them."

"While loosely woven cloth masks are the most comfortable, they protect you the least," says Nazarian. So, you'll want to opt for a mask that either has multiple layers or is made with cotton or polyester to provide both breathable comfort and protection while you work out.

Another benefit of a breathable mask can be less skin irritation or 'maskne' (mask-induced acne). And, trust that if you're dealing with it, you're *definitely* not alone. According to board-certified dermatologist Hadley King, MD, an occlusive mask can generate humidity on your face, leading to sebum and sweat that causes irritation, inflammation, and breakouts.

The good thing is that a breathable mask doesn't necessarily have to be less protective. In fact, you'll see that, below, King recommends a lot of multi-layered masks that are actually made with anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.

When your breathing gets heavy, a structured mask like Under Armor’s is key to avoid inhaling fabric. What’s more, this built-for-athletes style features a water-resistant outer shell and an antimicrobial treatment on the inside layer filled with a polyurethane foam that lets air through but makes it hard for moisture and sweat to pass.

It even has built-in UPF 50+ sun protection—a great benefit for outdoor workouts. Some reviewers recommend sizing up, though customers of all sizes have noted the mask’s comfort.

Reviewer rave: “This mask is breathable. The straps around the ears are soft and don’t bother my ears. I ran a 5k this morning with it on for the first time and I just felt so relieved. I highly recommend it.”

These face coverings have a big celeb following (Jennifer Lopez, Hailey Bieber, and Lily Collins, to name a few!), and it's no surprise why. The brand's washable made-for-sports style is designed with a sport mesh exterior, cotton lining, a pocket for adding an extra filter if desired, an adjustable nose wire, and ear loops.

And, yup, they're selling them for just $1 right now. Kind of a no-brainer.

Reviewer rave: “I like the fit—no gaps and I can breathe quite well when running or walking. I have received several positive comments from friends. Washes well, too.”

These medical-grade masks are my top pick for a disposable workout mask. Not only have I run five-plus miles in the three-ply design, but I only experience the slightest bit of moisture build-up despite getting super sweaty.

I hardly feel like I have anything on when I wear it, and I can easily adjust the nose bridge for a secure fit. I’m partial to the black for day-to-day, but love the white and olive colors, too.

Reviewer rave: “These are hands-down the best masks I’ve ever tried (and we’ve tried dozens)! I have asthma and have had a hard time wearing masks while doing strenuous activities like running. Absolutely no problems when I wear these masks! They stay popped out and away from your mouth. Can’t thank you enough for designing these!”

Outdoor Research's cleverly-designed mask is made with structured air mesh, which creates a bubble of space for you to breathe comfortably, while the sides remain snug and close to your face.

Reviewer rave: “So comfy and breathable; perfect for weightlifting and HIIT!”

The cost of disposable masks can really rack up, but this affordable pack is a customer favorite on Amazon. The other added benefit is they also have an adjustable ear loop so you can adjust it to your comfort." Reviewer rave: "Highly recommend these for comfort, ease of use, filtration, and performance. They do not restrict you from being active because you can easily breathe and they won't overheat your face excessively."

"This duck bill-style mask offers reliable protection and is NIOSH-approved," says Zeichner. "It balances comfort and protection at an affordable price, too." Plus, the headband-style shape means you won't have to worry about sore ears. Reviewer rave: "This 'duckbill' or 'pouch' N95 mask is a simple, brilliant design that folds flat. It conforms smoothly to the face, and the fabric feels soft. The bridge-of-nose wire is actually two parallel wires and molds well to the nose slope, preventing fog on eyeglasses."

Made from recycled polyester and elastane, this three-pack comes with two-ply masks that are soft, stretchy, and breathable for workouts. They're also machine-washable, so you can easily throw them in the laundry after a sweaty workout. Reviewer rave: "I have many masks made by many different athletic companies. These Adidas masks are, by far, the best. I teach in them all day long at school without the mask going into my mouth or nose, then I teach Pilates or Bootcamp in a different one for several sweaty hours in the evenings. These are the ONLY masks I have been able to say that I can breathe in and keep out of my mouth when breathing heavily or even shouting. They wick away moisture from my face. I've purchased about 15 of them and use them in constant rotation."
